Hoja Lopez says her life is like a Wes Anderson film.
It’s just an unusual amount of eclectic and weird things that don’t have anything to do with each other,” she says. “But everything comes together and turns into something beautiful.”
Her love of table tennis. Her current top 4 standing in the Houston Pride Idol singing competition.
And now, her Saturday win at the U.S. Air Guitar regional championship at Warehouse Live. Seriously.
Lopez bested several contestants during two rounds of awesomeness to become “the first Venezuelan-born regional champion in U.S. history.” She now will be flown to Washington, D.C., in August for the national competition.
“It’s like accidental goodness,” she says.
Pretty rad for a chick who has no, um, formal training besides a few quick bedroom licks. Lopez signed up five minutes before the competition under the name Mojo Gogo. She was originally there to support a friend (Jacob Calle, who finished in fourth place).
“Two chicks got onstage that were really, really horrible, and I was like, ‘I could probably kick their (butts).’”
The judges — including 2008 U.S. and World Air Guitar champion Craig “Hot Lixx Hulahan” Billmeier — agreed and awarded Lopez the title after watching her rock out to California Über Alles by the Dead Kennedys and Danzig’s Mother. She will now compete against 24 other air guitarists during the August nationals. That winner moves on to Finland for the world title.
But there’s little time for extended celebrating (besides a late-night meal at Chapultepec restaurant). Lopez is nursing a nasty case of “rocklash” and is focused on Pride Idol, which is entering its fifth week of competition. She’s one of four remaining singers and has wowed the crowd with quirky, confident performances of tunes by Alicia Keys, Pat Benatar and Björk. Also in the running are Anthony Magee, A.J. Cabrera and Shauna Wood.
The winner of Pride Idol receives $1,000 worth of studio time and a two-song demo recorded at Grammy-winning Urbana Studios in Houston, home of Tejano group La Mafia; a Halloween cruise; a performance slot at the June 27 Pride Festival; and prime placement in the nighttime Pride Parade.
Remaining Pride Idol performances are Thursday and June 25 at Guava Lamp.
“I think I’m just trying to have as much fun as possible and not let myself get too nervous,” she says.
