Sunday, March 8, 2009 at 9:03 am

After having won the toss and electing to field first, New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori came under immense pressure, as India scored a mamoth total of 392 in 50 overs for the loss of 4 wickets in the third ODI at Christchurch today (March 8).

This is the highest total ever by any team in the Kiwi land, breaking the earlier record of the hosts posting a total of 350-9 against the Aussies. Also, India smashed 18 sixes and equalled the record of maximum sixes in an inngings along with South Africa.

Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar steered the Indian innings to the grand total, as he scored his 43rd hundred and first in New Zealand. Sachin’s ton came off 101 balls, which included 10 fours and 2 sixes, however, he cramped up and left the field in the 45th over after scoring 163 not out.

Meanwhile, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (68) played a power-packed innings along with Suresh Raina (38*), who slammed sixes right from the word go.

But, Dhoni in an attempt to continue his blitz failed to take his team through the 50 overs, as he fell prey to Kyle Mills.

Earlier, Sachin along with Yuvraj Singh propelled the Indian innings forward with over a 100 runs partnership. Yuvi scored yet another half-century, after India lost openers Virender Sehwag(3) and Gautam Gambhir(15) by the 12th over of the match.  The Punjab lad, however, failed to convert his half-century into a ton, as he was dismissed for 87 off 60 balls by Elliot in the 29th over.

Opener Virender Sehwag was unable to get India off to a flier this time after he was was bowled by Kyle Mills for 3 off 6 deliveries. Sehwag went for a cross-batted heave over midwicket, but missed and lost his wicket in the process.

The home team went into the match without skipper Daniel Vettori who rushed to Auckland to be with his wife Mary who is expecting the birth of their first child later today. Brendon McCullum was named captain for the match.

Off-spinner Jeetan Patel replaces Vettori while Tim Southee came in for Ian O’Brein.

India retained the same team which played in the abandoned second match.
