Amar Singh takes a swipe at Murli Deora

Petroleum Minister Murli Deora again came into the line of attack by Samajwadi Party, with its General Secretary Amar Singh demanding his replacement “because of his proximity to a particular industrial house”.

“If I ever become a minister, I will not take up Telecom or Information and Broadcasting Ministry, as I have relations with Anil Ambani and Amitabh Bachchan,” Amar Singh pointedly stated in a scathing atack directed towards Deora.

The SP leader, whose party’s support is crucial for the government ahead of the trust vote however, downplayed Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani’s meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

“He (Mukesh) is a part of PM’s Economic Advisory Council and has all the right to meet anyone,” Singh said, adding that Mukesh had recently met, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya and Jyoti Basu also. For industrialisation, industrialists have to meet politicians and it should not be interpreted in a wrong manner, he added.

Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh today vehemently denied that he had asked for the removal of Finance Minister P Chidambaram and Petroleum Minister Murli Deora as a condition for his party’s support to the Congress over the nuclear deal.

”I am no wheeler dealer. I am not doing any deal for any Cabinet berth,” said the SP leader while talking to reporters after a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He said he was not against Mr Chidamabaram or Mr Deora individually but against the management of their respective departments, which were creating hardships for the common man.

The skyrocketing prices of essential commodities, coupled with sharp rise in the petroleum products had made it difficult for the commonman to make both ends meet. The record inflation and the price rise were the issues on which the party would continue to  oppose the government, said Mr Singh.
