Indian business tycoons Mukesh Ambani and Azim Premji are to meet US President Barack Obama at the White House later today (February 13). The meeting which comes in the backdrop of the global financial meltdown is of significance for the future of Indo-US business ties, especially in view of Obama’s stand on outsourcing.
Ambani - chairman of Reliance Industries (RIL)and Premji will be the first Indian dignitaries to meet US President Barack Obama, as part of the elite group of CEOs, which will meet Obama on Friday morning at the White House for over two hours.
When contacted by TOI, an RIL spokesperson confirmed their rendezvous with the new American president.
Ambani and Premji are part of the delegation led by ‘The Business Council’, an association of CEOs of the world’s most important business enterprises. It serves as an independent forum for “interchange of ideas and development of positive, practical recommendations for action”. Since its formation in 1933, it has been called upon by American presidents for advice.
The Council limits itself to 150 active members, each of whom is selected on the basis of personal qualities and position as the CEO of leading private sector businesses, according to the group’s website.
Other global leaders in the delegation include Dow Chem CEO Andrew Leveris, Delta Air Lines CEO Richard H Anderson, Best Buy CEO Bradbury H Anderson, Motorola president Gregory Brown, Micheal Dell of Dell and Tony Haward of BP. Premji, whose presence in the group assumes significance in light of Obama’s stand on outsourcing, has significant business interest in the outsourcing space.
