COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s capital will host a crucial meeting of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) tomorrow, with some of the most powerful figures of world cricket in attendance.
The importance of the meeting would probably lie in sideline discussions and the future of world cricket which is at the crossroads due to this week’s terrorist attacks in Mumbai, could be defined in the Sri Lankan capital.
The meeting would be held at the Galle Face hotel, but there will not be any bi-lateral discussions between officials of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) who are not on good terms with each other.
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Ijaz Butt, who arrives here yesterday, will meet BCCI president Shashank Manohar in one-to-one talks to decide on the fate of the forthcoming India-Pakistan series scheduled for January-February next year.
Indian media reports suggested that the Indian government would stop the cricket team’s tour of Pakistan following the attacks in Mumbai.
Indian authorities have however said that no final decision has been arrived as yet on the series that was to feature three Tests, five One-day Internationals and a Twenty20 International from January 4 to February 19.
The series is in jeopardy after India accused Pakistan of supporting the terrorists and tension rose between the two neighboring countries.
According to sources there aren’t any important issues on the agenda of the main ACC Meeting where PCB’s Butt will take over as the ACC chief in place of former PCB chairman Nasim Ashraf. Ashraf who was elected as the ACC chairman had to give up the post after resigning as the PCB chairman in August.
The 2011 World Cup is also likely to be discussed following recent reports that the event might be relocated from the sub-continent due to security concerns.
Australia and New Zealand who failed to secure the hosting rights of the 2011 World Cup over the Asian bloc, seem to have grabbed the opportunity that arose with the Mumbai incident.
Teams like Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, England and West Indies have shown concern about touring Pakistan in recent times and with the Mumbai attacks, have started to label India also as a dangerous destination.
These issues are also expected to be discussed at the ICC Chief Executives meeting to be held in Cape Town next week.
Meanwhile, sources said that BCCI chief Manohar, PCB chief Butt and ACC Chief Executive Syed Ashraful Huq will have a round of private discussions with former SLC interim committee chief Jayantha Dharmadasa and SLC’s present interim committee secretary K. Mathivanan on Saturday at the request of visiting officials.
