Assam floods threaten endangered rhinos

As rising flood waters continue to wreck havoc in Assam, the Brahmaputra’s fury now threatens to destroy the Khaziranga National Park.
The Assam floods have displaced atleast 12 lakh people so far and the Brahmaputra shows no signs of relenting. The waters have submerged at least 50 percent of the Khaziranga wildlife sanctuary threatening the already endangered - one horned rhino.
A mother and a calf died a slow death. This is the reality of Assam’s Kaziranga National Park, 430 sq kms threatened by the fury of the Bramhaputra.
At the mercy of these swelling waters are these endangered inhabitants, the one horned rhino.
The park has forever been the target of poachers - and now its nature’s fury. 50 % of the park submerged by the overflowing Brahmaputr and all that one could get from the government is an apology for an answer.
Prithvi Majhi, Minister of Water Resources, Assam, said, “The solution of Kaziranga is in Brahmaputra. The flow of Brahmaputra should be controlled first. Then, shelter to the animals can be then be given.”
Considering the rest of the state is witnessing one of the worst floods in recent times - with over 12 lakh people displaced - and anger over the apathy of the government, it seems these inhabitants might end up being last on the list of priorities, if at all.
