Assam on the edge, indefinite curfew

Monday, October 6, 2008 at 8:10 am

Assam continues to be tense today (Octtober 6), in the wake of the indefinite curfew that has been imposed in the state. The state has become another communal cauldron over the past 4 days, owing to clashes between the Bangladeshi migrants and Bodo tribes people in various districts of the State.

The state government has also issued shoot-at-sight orders, as a part of its crackdown, in the violence affected areas, including the Udalgiri district, which has been the epicentre of the violence.

Reportedly at least 30 people have been killed and thousands left homeless after their homes were torched by angry mob of protesters. Bodos have fled their homes in panic and have taken shelter in temporary relief camps set up by the administration in five places.
