The trio’s fitness means Phillip Hughes, who was on standby for Ponting, and Steve Smith, on standby for Hauritz, will not play while Clint McKay is dropped to make room for Siddle.

Danish Kaneria and Umar Gul are out for Pakistan, with Saeed Ajmal and Abdur Rauf taking their places.

The spinner Kaneria has a finger injury but his replacement Ajmal has a big turning doosra which caused Australia problems in a one day series earlier in the year.

Gul is apparently omitted on form ground and is replaced by Rauf, a right-arm paceman in his third Test.
