The government headed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has made the practice illegal and has announced plans to rid the country of beggars in the next five years.
Head of government Disabled Welfare Foundation, Gazi Mohammad Nurul Kabir, said officials devised a plan of action to rehabilitate the beggars to “can not create disturbance and tarnish the image of the country.”
Free job training is part of the strategy, which will also include the free distribution of rickshaws, grocery stores and home base.
“But if we see that these benefits come away from the begging, we have a plan to create special areas of begging in the city where you can ask without creating a nuisance,” said Kabir.
