British actor Ben Kingsley, who played the award-wining role of the protagonist in Richard Attenborough’s legendary film ‘Gandhi’, will attend a special screening of the movie during the Middle East International Film Festival (MEIFF) here this week. To be held 26 years after its release at the second edition of the MEIFF organised by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH), the special screening will be accompanied by Arabic dubbing for the first time.
The 1982 box-office success, won a total of 31 awards and 16 nominations to become the most accoladed film of that year. It won eight Oscars at the 1983 Academy Awards including ‘Best Picture’, ‘Best Leading Actor’ and ‘Best Director’. Sir Ben is one of the few actors to have won all four major motion picture awards — the Academy, the BAFTA, Golden Globe Award and Screen Actors Guild Award throughout his career.
He was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2000 and was knighted in the 2001 New Years’ Honours list. The tale of the “half-naked fakir” as famously quoted by Winston Churchill, ‘Gandhi’ is the story of a man who took on
an Empire with truth, non-violence and indomitable will.
To be held from October 10-19, the second edition of the festival will screen the film on October 11. “As the principle organiser of MIEFF 2008, our main aim is to uphold and appreciate culture,” said Mohamed Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Director General of Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) while detailing the MIEFF programme.
