Blast destroys Press club in Pakistan
Thursday, February 19, 2009 at 5:02 am
An explosion today (Feb 18) destroyed a local press club building in Pakistan’s restive South Waziristan tribal region though no one was injured in the blast, officials said.
The two-storey building in Wana city was destroyed by the explosion. No one was hurt as the building was empty at the time of the blast, local authorities said.
Authorities said some 15 unidentified men placed explosives at the press club at 3 am (local time) and asked several students living in the same building to leave the place. They then blew up the building.
Journalists said some poor students had been accommodated in two rooms in the press club. The local militia force also had its base near the building.
No group claimed responsibility for the attack. The local Taliban led by Mulla Nazir condemned the attack. Attacks on journalists are common in Pakistan’s tribal belt and at least 10 scribes have been killed over the past five years.
Many tribal journalists have moved to other regions due to security concerns.
