The Bombay High Court today (Nov 20) upheld the ban on the controversial film “Deshdrohi”, despite the assurances of the producer –  Kamal R Khan — that he would delete the scenes which might hurt sentiments of the public.

The state government today has decided to continue the ban on the film “Deshdrohi”, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra R R Patil said in Mumbai.

The producer of the film has asked for revoking the ban on his film and has continusouly appealed to the government of Maharashtra that he would remove the controversial parts of the movie.

Kamal Khan producer of ‘Deshdrohi’, a film on the plight of a north Indian migrant, had met Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Chitkala Zutshi and Home Secretary Anna Dani on November 18, seeking to set aside the ban.

Khan had earlier moved the Bombay High Court against the ban. High Court refused to interfere with the ban, but asked government to give him a hearing and take a decision afresh.

Mumbai police top officials who saw the film, had earlier suggested that screening of the film be suspended as it may worsen the law and order situation in the backdrop of Raj Thackeray-led anti-north Indian campaign.

“Deshdrohi” deals with the subject of anti-immigrant violence. Earlier, the Maharashtra government had banned the screening of the film against the backdrop of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) agitations, fearing it would worsen the law and order situation in the state.

The producer and lead actor of the film, Kammal Khan has now again said that he will delete scenes that might be offensive to public sentiments.
