Arlington, Mass. – The Massachusetts Department of Public Heath has confirmed that a Brackett Elementary School student has contracted the H1N1 virus also known as the swine flu.
According to a letter sent by interim Superintendent of Schools Kathleen Bodie to parents on May 22, the student was not in school while symptomatic, had mild symptoms and has made a complete recovery.
“As a precaution, school nurses are dismissing any students who are symptomatic,” the letter states. “It appears that this is an isolated case and the school will continue to remain open.”
Bodie’s letter indicates that the staff, school nurses and the Arlington Health Department are also monitoring absentee rates.
“Should any signs of increased flu-like activity be observed and additional cases confirmed, then the school department in consultation with the Arlington Health Department will evaluate the need for school closure,” Bodie stated in her letter. “We urge parents to notify the school nurse if your child has flu-like symptoms and to keep your child home while ill.”
