British man guilty of murdering Harry Potter actor

Friday, March 6, 2009 at 4:03 am

A British man was found guilty on Wednesday (March 4) of stabbing to death a teenage actor who played a role in the forthcoming Harry Potter film. The man convicted for murdering the Rob Knox, the teenage actor of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”, has been sentenced to life after being convicted for the crime.

Rob Knox, 18, died after being stabbed five times outside a bar near London in May 2007 as he tried to protect his younger brother Jamie,17, who he heard was being threatened by 22-year-old Karl Bishop. He later died in hospital.

Knox had a small part as Marcus Belby in the forthcoming “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.”

Karl Bishop, 22, was found guilty of his murder at London’s Old Bailey criminal court. The court heard Bishop had been involved in a dispute with Knox at the bar the previous week. The following week he returned but was refused entry and ended up in another confrontation with Knox and his friends.

He returned home and armed himself with two kitchen knives. During the altercation Bishop threatened that he “would stab anyone who came near him,” prosecutor Brian Altman said.

The court heard that Bishop showed no signs of remorse. When told that Knox had died, he replied: “Yeah, sweet.”

Sentencing Bishop, Judge David Bean said, “I do not think it is proved that you intended to kill Robert Knox. The truth is that you simply could not care less whether you killed him or not. Your lack of regret, let alone remorse, was truly chilling.”

On the night of the stabbing, Bishop said, he had not wanted to go back there but was persuaded to by his friends. He said he was “merry drunk”. After getting into another fight, he went back to his home to fetch two knives.

He told the court: “I took two because two was scarier than one and I was angry at that time. I just wanted to scare whoever was down there. I wasn’t really thinking that straight at the time because I was so angry, pissed off.”

At the time of the attack, police were investigating Bishop for another knifepoint robbery and burglary.
