Fighter jets bombed suspected Tamil Tiger bunkers in northern Sri Lanka in a stepped up air campaign against the guerrillas, while ground battles left 22 rebels dead, the defence ministry said.
War planes pounded positions of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in support of ground troops advancing in rebel-held territory, the ministry said.
There were no immediate reports of casualties from the latest air strikes, but the ministry said 22 rebels were killed and another 24 wounded in fresh fighting on Sunday.
Official reports show the government has intensified air strikes against the Tigers since the weekend.
There was no comment from the Tigers about the latest fighting, which came as Sri Lankan troops were on an offensive to capture Kilinochchi, the political capital of the Tigers in northern Sri Lanka.

Prime Minister Dissolves Canadian Parliament
Monday, September 8, 2008 at 9:06 am
OTTAWA: Prime Minister Of Canada Stephen Harper on Sunday triggered an early election, dissolving Parliament in a bid to bolster his party’s grip on power in a vote next month that will be the country’s third national ballot in four years.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper says he expects the Oct 14 vote to produce another minority government but recent polls show the Conservatives could win the majority they need to rule without help from opposition parties.
Analysts said Harper’s party has a better shot of winning now than if they had waited until being forced into a vote later when the Canadian economy might be worse off or after Canadians could be influenced by the U.S. presidential election results.
In 2006, the Conservatives unseated the Liberal Party, which had held power for nearly 13 years in power, but as a minority government they have been forced to rely on opposition lawmakers to pass legislation and adopt budgets.
Electoral legislation that Harper helped enact after he came to power in 2006 fixed the date for the next election in October 2009.
But a loophole allows the prime minister to ask the governor general to dissolve Parliament, which Harper did Sunday after signaling in recent weeks that he was leaning toward an early election. Harper said he is running on economic issues and has stressed his opposition to an energy tax proposed by the Liberals.

Israel Opposes Military Strike On Iran’s Nuclear Sites:Shimon Peres
Sunday, September 7, 2008 at 12:21 pm
JERUSALEM:Israeli President Shimon Peres said on Sunday he opposes a military strike on Iran and prefers the use of international economic sanctions to persuade Tehran to halt its nuclear enrichment programme.
“A military operation is not necessary. I do not think the Americans think in these terms because they have many other cards to play,” Peres told Israeli public radio after a meeting with US Vice President Dick Cheney in Italy.
“If the Americans manage to form a coalition to unify their positions with those of Europeans, they have sufficient means to exert pressure on the Iranians,” Peres added.
Peres had met Cheney on the sidelines of the Ambrosetti forum on Italy’s Lake Como, an international gathering of leaders and experts focused mostly on economic issues.
Israel and the West have repeatedly called on Iran to halt its uranium enrichment programme, which they fear is aimed at developing nuclear weapons but which Tehran defends as part of a peaceful energy venture.
Israel, the region’s sole if undeclared nuclear-armed state, has considered Iran its main strategic threat after repeated predictions of its demise by senior Iranian leaders.
Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak said last month after a meeting with visiting US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that Israel would not rule out any options to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
Tehran meanwhile risks a possible fourth round of UN sanctions after it failed to give a clear response to an incentives package offered by six major world powers in return for halting uranium enrichment, a process which makes nuclear fuel but also the core of an atomic bomb.
