The hardware partners install its Windows operating system.

The continued negative reception that XP’s successor, Windows Vista, has had among the corporate I. T. buyers is apparently underscored by the extension of XP.

In June 2008, Microsoft stopped selling XP to retailers. However, it allowed PC-makers to license the operating system until Jan. 31, 2009.

A Microsoft spokesperson informed in an emailed statement, “Microsoft is making accommodation through a flexible inventory program that will allow distributors to place their final orders by Jan. 31 2009; and take delivery of those orders through May 30, 2009. This is not an extension of sales.”

“The decision was designed to make life easier for system PC builders, smaller resellers who assemble computers to order, many of whom are currently strapped for cash,” informed a person familiar with the matter, who declined to be named.

Co-founder, former chairman and CEO of the company Andy Grove said, it is time to consider a new business field for the company and that’s car batteries.

In the early 2000s, Intel tried to become a consumer electronics manufacturer with Intel-branded toys and MP3 players. The strategy was quickly shelved again.

According to the article, published in Wall Street Journal, Grove said, and he is apparently urging the current CEO Paul Otellini to take Intel go into the battery business.

It is unclear if Otellini will follow Grove’s advice, but if he did, it would certainly be a rather unusual strategic move.

The first-ever mouse was made from a wooden block with wheels mounted on its base, and featured a red button on top of its case, and a cable at its back, which probably made one of the researchers to nickname it as “mouse”.

Recollecting his memories on its name, Engelbart said, “We thought that when it had escaped out to the world it would have a more dignified name. But it didn’t.”

Though Engelbart proposed the idea in early 1960s, while studying the correlation between computers and humans, the first prototype of the device was developed in 1964, and a full-fledged working mouse was demonstrated in Fall Joint Computer Conference in San Francisco in 1968.
The first commercial version of the mouse was launched by Xerox in 1981, but the device gained recognition after Apple launched it with its Macintosh computer systems in 1984.

Since then the device has been a prominent input device for computers, but today, it is facing stringent competition from touch screen interfaces and gesture control, as offered by devices like Apple’s iPhone and Nintendo Wii.

Google’s voice search function on the latest version of its Google Mobile search app is pretty slickly implemented: it knows when you put it up to your ear, prompts you to speak, and then searches when you move it away from your ear. No other application has leveraged that same functionality yet, and–as it turns out–for good reason: the part of the iPhone’s code that controls that capability is undocumented by Apple.

Using undocumented Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) is not just frowned upon–it’s against the terms that iPhone developers agree to when they download the SDK. The reason for this isn’t particularly nefarious: undocumented APIs are often in active development and subject to change, which could lead to third-party applications that rely on them to break or crash. Daring Fireball’s John Gruber has a more in-depth piece about what exactly this means.

But the central point of this issue is that somehow Google’s application made its way into the App Store anyway, despite violating the terms–and we know Apple’s not exactly shy about rejecting applications for that reason. The voice search feature itself was highly publicized before its release, and Google has now even admitted that it used undocumented APIs, although it denied using private or dynamic frameworks, which could have been a more serious issue from a technological standpoint.

So did Apple’s vetting process–which we’ll politely call inconsistent at best–just miss this one? (perhaps they were too enamored about how cool it was.) Or did they know that the app used the APIs and give them a pass anyway because, hey, they’re Google–don’t be evil, remember? Not to go all Watergate on this, but the important question becomes what did Apple know and, yes, when did they know it?

The XO laptop will be sold through Amazon in the same way as the G1G1 program, where a consumer donates US$400 for two laptops, with one of them delivered to a child in a developing nation.

Only Linux-based XO laptops will be available through Amazon, said Jim Gettys, vice president of software engineering at OLPC. A Windows version will not be sold.

For now, Amazon’s U.S. storefront will sell the XO. OLPC is reviewing the possibility of selling the laptop through Amazon in other countries.

Designed for use by children in developing countries, the laptop has been praised for its innovative hardware features and environmentally friendly design. It comes with 1G byte of internal flash storage, 256M bytes of RAM, a 7.5-inch liquid-crystal display screen and wireless networking.

Depending on usage, the XO includes a specially designed lithium-ferro phosphate battery, which OLPC claims is more power efficient than commercial laptops. The laptop can also be run on solar power, foot pedal or pull-string, making it useful for situations where power is unreliable or unavailable.

OLPC, which is a nonprofit organization, competes in the global education market with Intel’s Classmate PC. OLPC has lost orders to Intel as it recovers from restructuring and increases in the laptop’s price and manufacturing costs.

An incremental update to the XO laptop is being prepared by OLPC that will allow the laptop to be faster and store more data. Code-named XO-1 Gen 1.5, the laptop may include a faster processor, increased flash storage, a new wireless chip and rubber bumpers for improved screen protection. The target ship date for the updated laptop is the first quarter of 2009, the organization has said.

OLPC has already announced XO-2, the next-generation laptop that will include a software-based, touch-sensitive keyboard and two touchscreen displays. That laptop is expected to ship in 2010.

Singapore - Fear of a virus attack and data loss are prompting firms in the Asia-Pacific region to adopt disaster recovery plans, a survey said on Monday.

Conducted by Symantec Corporation, the survey shows that 42 per cent of the firms queried worry about a virus attack and 41 per cent fear data loss.

Natural disasters emerged as the next biggest headache spurring disaster recovery investment at 31 per cent, followed by accidental or malicious employee behaviour at
30 per cent.

The survey included more than 1,000 IT professionals globally. Nearly 30 per cent of the respondents were from the Asia-Pacific region, including India, Malaysia and Singapore.

Asian businesses are still not carrying out tests often enough to improve disaster recovery plans. Fifty-two per cent of the firms carry out tests once a year or less, the survey said. (dpa)

Chicago — Ocean Tomo Auctions, LLC — the auctions arm of Ocean Tomo, LLC, the leading Intellectual Capital Merchant Banc® firm — today announced that The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will be participating in its October 30th Live IP Auction in Chicago. At the auction, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center technologies will be made available to the public as Lots 56, 57 and 58. Licensing government-owned patents through a live-auction process is a highly novel approach to partnering, and Goddard’s participation in Ocean Tomo’s auction will be the first time a federal laboratory has participated in such an event.

NASA’s participation is a result of a new ground-breaking partnership between NASA and Ocean Tomo Federal Services, LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ocean Tomo. This new partnership focuses on maximizing the value of NASA Goddard’s inventions by transferring technologies to commercialization partners, ultimately benefiting U.S. taxpayers and the domestic economy. Cheeks said the arrangement offers several benefits to NASA including the ability to leverage Ocean Tomo’s capabilities and expertise in monetizing IP assets through the firm’s successful live auction and other transaction platforms.

Lot 57 - GPS based system and applications

Until now, Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, while providing an accurate and inexpensive means of navigation, have been limited to low Earth orbit (LEO) missions. The technologies disclosed in the 6 patents offered as Lot 57 are a leap forward for GPS technology. These technologies provide autonomous, real-time, fully spaceflight-qualified GPS receivers with exceptional capabilities for fast signal acquisition and weak signal tracking. These features enable the use of GPS navigation in high and geostationary orbits. In addition, this technology increases the accuracy of independent attitude estimation for use in aerial vehicles as well as ground-based aiming and pointing applications Given the broad scope of this patent portfolio, this Lot offers an opportunity to obtain the exclusive license of next-generation GPS technology and would be of interest to companies within the fields of surveying, navigation, machine guidance, wireless platforms, telecommunication infrastructure and homeland security.

GPRS, short for General Packet Radio Service, a standard for wireless communications which runs at speeds up to 115 kilobits per second, compared with current GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) systems’ 9.6 kilobits.

GPRS lets mobile phones send and receive data over an Internet-Protocol (IP) network, at the same speed as a standard dial up phone line wherever you are. With it, your mobile phone can surf the web, send and receive email, download data and media. It also acts as a connection for your notebook or other mobile devices.

GPRS users are referred to as being “always on,” because with it, they are always connected to the Internet. Using short text messages, field workers can report their progress and request support. Travelling executives can access their corporate email, as can a sales person, who might also check on inventory. You can automate your home or office with GPRS devices and monitor your investments. Use it in conjunction with your notebook to transfer files, or collaborate from a distance. “Always on” yes, but not always paying you are charged based only on the amount of data transferred not call duration.

Like GPRS, 3G is also a wireless communication service. 3G is an ITU specification for the third generation (analog cellular was the first generation, digital PCS the second) of mobile communications technology. 3G promises increased bandwidth, up to 384 Kbps when a device is stationary or moving at pedestrian speed, 128 Kbps in a car, and 2 Mbps in fixed applications. 3G will work over wireless air interfaces such as GSM, TDMA, and CDMA. It gives you ‘always-on’ continuous connection to the Internet via your Tablet PC or Notebook and Mobile.

The technically minded, 3G stands for third generation wireless, that’s nearly seven times as fast as a standard dial-up connection. All you need to know otherwise is that’s the equivalent of a corporate intranet page in under five seconds, or a typical web page with images and ads in slightly more. Now you can enjoy your mobile online activities, at work or play, at faster speeds than ever before.

Some of the main advantages are that 3G allows for higher call volumes and supports multimedia data applications such as video and photography.

The effects of 3G on society, some of the latest features which have been brought about by this technology are:

Video calling facility is with 3G you can now actually see the person on the other side! As long as both people have a 3G phone you no longer have to imagine what they look like and you can see them face-to-face via your cell phone’s screen.

Obtaining information and news with 3G technology it is possible to access any site on the Internet by using your phone as a modem with your laptop. You can use your favorite search engines to find information on the weather, the daily news, stocks and shares, or practically any other information you require to ensure that you are continually on top of things.

If you have left your office and forgotten to send an important e-mail, you are now able to quickly and efficiently perform this function directly by using your cell phone. Alternatively, you can use your cell phone as a modem to be connected to your laptop or PDA (Personal Digital Assistant).

Since the invention of cell phones, games have always formed a part of mobile devices. As technology has developed, the games we are able to engage in have become far more interactive, exciting and entertaining. For those who play games over their mobile devices for recreation purposes or for those who simply play to pass the time, 3G now makes it possible to download these games at anytime and from almost anywhere.

The speed and quality of 3G really contributes to enhancing the quality of film over mobile devices. One is now able to view film trailers, reviews, and interviews, download ring tones, wall papers and enter competitions all by means of your cell phone.

With the incredible sound and video quality of your 3G phone you can view highlights from your favorite matches and you’ll always have access to the latest scores.

It’s now possible for you to download songs, music videos and interviews. You can even compose your own ring tone through your cell phone if you wish!

3G is an exciting new technology that is being incorporated into mobile devices across the globe. Users are now able to make person-to-person calls, download data and do a variety of other tasks they never imagined possible all via their 3G cell phones.
