Charlie Davies Car AccidentCharlie Davies Car Accident, Team USA men’s national forward Charlie Davies was seriously injured in a car accident early Tuesday in Virginia. Davies spent more than three hours of surgery at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC, according to a spokesman for U.S. Soccer. Another person in the car was killed.

“Obviously, as a team we were saddened to learn this news,” coach Bob Bradley said in a statement posted on the website of U.S. Soccer. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Charlie and his family and people in the car and the families of others involved. As a team, we support each other in a moment that has hit us hard to ensure everybody.”

Ashley J. Roberta, 22, of Phoenix, Md., was pronounced dead at the scene at the George Washington Memorial Parkway in Arlington, Virginia Another woman who was riding in the car was taken to Washington Hospital Center for treatment after his car slammed into metal fence on a stretch of road between the Memorial Bridge and the Pentagon around 3:15 am, said Sgt. David Schlosser, a spokesman for police in the U.S. park.

It was unclear who was driving the car, but Michael Kammarman, a spokesman for U.S. Soccer, said no other members of the U.S. team or the staff involved. Davies’s parents were en route to Washington, San Diego.

Davies, who is in Washington with the U.S. team for its World Cup qualifying final of Wednesday’s match against Costa Rica, has become a leading striker Bradley coach after this year’s star performances. He played 78 minutes in the team’s victory 3-2 victory over Honduras in San Pedro Sula on Saturday. With this victory, the Americans secured a place in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa next summer.
