China flays US plan for arms sale to Taiwan

Sunday, October 5, 2008 at 3:10 am

China today (October 4, 2008) flayed the Bush administration’s plan to sell arms worth USD 6.5 billion to Taiwan, saying it would damage Sino-US relations.

“The Chinese government and the Chinese people strongly oppose and object to the US government’s actions, which harm Chinese interests and Sino-US relations,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao was quoted as stating.

Liu also warned the sale would be a setback in the development of peaceful relations between China and Taiwan. The proposed US deal includes, Apache helicopters and Patriot III missiles, which the US government announced in a notification to Congress yesterday (October 3).

Taiwan split with China during the Civil War in 1949 but Beijing continues to claim, Taiwan as part of its territory. US remains Taiwan’s most important ally, and the singlemost largest arms supplier despite Washington adhering to ‘One China policy’.

Taiwan has maintained that, while it hopes to improve its relations with China, it also wants to build a strong defence against any possible threat from Beijing.
