Srinagar, May 26, KONS: Common people were virtually held hostage and an unannounced curfew enforced by security arrangements around the Kashmir University on the occasion of the president, Pratibha Devisingh Patil, inaugurating the Kashmir Study Centre in the varsity today. The common people had to bear the brunt of the unprecedented security arrangements, as roads leading to the university had been sealed two days in advance and movement of all kinds restricted. Reports said that security forces were deployed over every inch of Hazratbal, with roadblocks of barbed wire erected to all routes leading to the university. Apart from the police and the paramilitary forces, special commandos had been deployed around the university, and only security vehicles plied on the roads. The banks of the Dal Lake, too, had been sanitized with a heavy police presence, with patrol boats crisscrossing the lake for the past three days. People in localities around Hazratbal, like Lal Bazaar, Habak, Zakura, Saida Kadal, and Tel Bal had been besieged in their homes since the previous day. Apart from strict restrictions on movement, people in these areas faced problems in procuring commodities of everyday use. People were confined to their homes during the president’s engagements in the university, and even children were unable to go to school. Passenger vehicles plying on the Hazratbal routes were diverted to other roads causing severe traffic jams in Dalgate, Khanyar, Rainawari, Soura, Hawal and Nauhatta till afternoon. Lal Bazaar residents, including Ghulam Muhammad, Muhammad Ashraf and Ghulam Nabi said on phone that people were being severely harassed under the pretext of security, and it appeared as if they were living in a war zone.
