ISLAMABAD :Top leaders of the coalition parties are holding a meeting here on Wednesday (today) to deliberate upon the grave internal and external threats to the national security and other political, economic and judicial problems of the country.
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif, ANP president Asfandyar Wali, and JUI-F Amir Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman have confirmed their participation.
The meeting is underway at the Prime Minister’s House and is being attended by key federal ministers, provincial governors, chief ministers, and heads of various security agencies. Three former interior secretaries namely Hasan Raza Pasha, Tasnim Noorani, and Tariq Mahmud have also been invited to make proposals for improving the internal security environment.
Talking to newsmen after his return from Libya on Tuesday Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman said that the country was facing multiple problems and grave threats from the United States to its sovereignty, which could only be tackled by national unity and common strategy. He expressed dissatisfaction over the performance of the coalition government during the past four months, saying the coalition partners had not been taken into confidence before taking important decisions.
Fazl said his party would make concrete suggestions in the meeting to solve the political and economic problems of the country and strengthen the coalition government on long-term basis. Shahbaz Sharif has also reiterated that PML-N would make every effort to make the coalition government a success and fulfil aspirations of the electorate.
Sources say that the coalition partners meeting will also take stock of the government performance and the people’s growing dismay over price-hike and socio-economic effects of the recent increases in the prices of oil, gas, electricity, food, and many other items of daily-use.
The reinstatement of the deposed judges is another lingering problem, which has shaken the coalition and confidence of the people over the major coalition partner - PPP. The legal fraternity has threatened to start a civil disobedience if the judges were not restored by the Independence Day, August 14, 2008. The meeting is bound to take a firm decision on the judges issue on which depends future of the coalition.
Meanwhile, political analysts have expressed concern over worsening law and order situation in NWFP, tribal belt, and Baloch areas of Balochistan with every passing day. Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan Chief Baitullah Mehsood is issuing threats the democratically-elected NWFP government to resign.
Analysts argue that despite the government’s policy of negotiated peace deals, Talibanisation, militancy, and extremism are on the rise in the country. The Taliban movement which started in North Waziristan a few years back has now spread in seven Fata agencies and Malakand, Swat, and Pata areas.
They say on every peace deal with militants the government surrendered its writ and political will to curb Talibanisation and left the peaceful tribal people at the mercy of all sorts of religious, political warlords or outright criminals.
