Jammu is tense once again after a man committed suicide over the Amarnath shrine board controversy.
The man, identified as Kuldeep Kumar Dogra had taken part in a hunger strike protesting land revocation to the Amaranath Shrine Board and had allegedly consumed poison. Over 600 activists from the BJP, Shiv Sena, VHP and the Bajrang Dal clashed with police after the incident.
Police have imposed a curfew in Jammu City. Several Hindu groups have been furious that land temporarily allotted for the Amarnath pilgrims was revoked. Even though curfew was imposed in the city sporadic incidents of violence have been reported from parts of Jammu.
Infact a policeman was beaten up by protesters in Bishna on the outskirts of Jammu. Kuldeep Kumar Dogra who committed suicide belongs to this area. Protesters defied the curfew and burnt a government vehicle also.
Jammu shutdown on Amarnath row extended till July 27
The Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti, which is spearheading the agitation against the revocation of the order transferring land to the Amarnath shrine board, today (July 24) extended the shutdown in the region till Sunday.
“In view of the supreme sacrifice made by a youth Kuldeep Kumar Dogra on Amarnath land issue, bandh will continue till July 27 to press for the demand of cancellation of revoked order on transfer of forest land to the shrine board and recall of Governor N N Vohra,” its convenor Leela Karan Sharma told reporters here this afternoon.
Dogra, who was part of a chain hunger strike in the land allotment row, killed himself by taking poison.
Sharma said, protest rallies will be taken out on July 27 throughout the region and the samiti will also consider an “economic blockade” of the valley. He also criticised National Conference president Omar Abdullah for his comments on the Amarnath land issue during the trust vote in Parliament. “Abdullah has hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus,” he said.
