Dhaka: Dhaka Not at Risk of Major Earthquake, Sylhet and cities are on the list of earthquake risk, as these two major cities are among the tectonic plates of the India and Burma. The researchers from the Geological Survey of Bangladesh (GSB), came up with this remark yesterday during a presentation on energy, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry.
It also includes the city of Dhaka in the risk list, an idea rejected by Petrobangla Chairman Dr. Hossain Monsur, also former head of Geology Department of Dhaka University.
ATM Asaduzzaman GSB and GSB Earthquake Cell Research Director Dr. Khurshid Alam jointly made his presentation at the meeting.
Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry organized the meeting to determine feasible actions to thwart any possible earthquake-related damage in the country.
In his presentation, the researchers said that Bangladesh has been in the middle of the Indian and Burmese tectonic plates, which carry some risk for the two main cities of Sylhet and Chittagong.
Referring to the 1897 earthquake that hit Bangladesh hard, the researchers said Douky fault can affect regions of Sylhet and Mymensingh.
He said the magnitude of the earthquake of 1897 was over 8 on the Richter scale and any possible future earthquake can be 7 on the Richter scale.
They said Dhaka is also carrying some risk by the lack Madhupur, which is placed very close to Dhaka.
Petrobangla Chairman Dr. Hossain Monsur according to the seismic risk of Dhaka.
Referring to his own conclusions from the research with a Japanese team two years ago, said he did not find any existence of active fault Madhupur.
He, however, emphasized to ensure compliance with the Building Code for civil construction in the country to contain the risk of earthquakes. “The Building Code must be strictly followed in all types of building construction.”
