Kolkata today (August 20) was brought to a total halt by a left union backed strike and the issue once again was inflation. The unions say it was a huge success but for a 12 year old who was stuck in a railway station for hours and battling for his life it was a different story.
The so called success of the trade unions was a big inconvenience for commuters. But for 12 year old Shupon Biswas it was a matter of life and death. The brave young boy, fighting a dangerous brain tumour lay without a complaint for seven hours on the floor at the Howrah Railway station. His train to Bangalore was cancelled because of the total bandh that didn’t spare a single long distance train.
A helpless Panchanan Das, Shopon’s father said, “We arrived at Howrah station and came to know that there was a Bharat bandh. So obviously we couldn’t undertake our journey to Bangalore anymore. There was no doctor for Shuvon and the medical room in the railway station was alos shut. His father could do nothing but watch his son suffer and gasp for breath in need for oxygen.
When Shopon became an embarassment for the party workers they brought in an ambulance and took him away. Shupon was a silent victim of a system, where politics doesn’t spare anyone and where the misery of a really sick child.
