Election Commission Postpones Bye-Polls

In a bid to avoid what appeared to many to be the path of confrontation, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Thursday vowed to go ahead with conducting bye-elections without dishonouring the Supreme Court order that barred it from doing so on the basis of bogus voters’ lists.
According to Election Commission (EC), Supreme Court ordered extension of polling date to ensure transparent voters list. The commission says that the voter list will be corrected before the by-elections take place. It said that by-election will now take place after removal of bogus votes from electoral lists of 2007 and registration of new votes.
Constituencies include NA 90 Mardan, NA 104 Kasur, NA 148-149 Multan, NA 158 Vehari and NA 195 Rahim Yar Khan. The Supreme Court had earlier issued directions for the ECP to complete the process of electoral rolls till February 23.
In a ruling on January 19, Supreme Court had halted the holding of by-elections on the basis of old voter lists. The ECP, however, had said it was difficult for it to complete the process in such a short time.
Constituencies include NA 90 Mardan, NA 104 Kasur, NA 148-149 Multan, NA 158 Vehari and NA 195 Rahim Yar Khan. Provincial constituencies include PP 18 Attock, PP 44 Mianwali, PS 57 Badin and PS 53 Tandu Muhammad Khan.
By-elections will start on February 25. Nadra is already operating three shifts in a day to cope with the mammoth task of making 19.5 million changes in the new draft electoral rolls identified during the countrywide door-to-door verification of voters.
