Elton John throws Oscar after party

Sir Elton John and his partner, David Furnish played host to their 17th annual Oscar party Sunday night (22 February) at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood.

More than 700 of John’s closest friends attended the party, which included an Oscar viewing party and dinner, as well as a party after the Oscar ceremony concluded.

Among the attendees were Sharon Stone, Whoopi Goldberg, Carrie Underwood, Keifer Sutherland, Fran Drescher, Josh Groban, Tyrese, Chris O’Donnell, Simon Cowell, Claire Danes, Chace Crawford, Kate Beckinsale, Ben Stiller and wife Christine Taylor, Tyler Perry and Ben Kingsley.

Grammy-award winning artist Raphael Saddiq, whom John declared his new favourite artist, performed at the party solo and with John.

Many of the party-goers’ thoughts were on the winners, included Heath Ledger, who was posthumously awarded best supporting actor for his role as the Joker in “The Dark Knight.”

“I think he deserved (the Oscar) for ‘Brokeback Mountain’,” Ben Stiller said. “I think he was an amazing actor and a great soul. It was beautiful to see his family up there.”

Sir Ben Kingsley, a past best actor winner himself, praised Sunday night’s winner of the same award, Sean Penn.

“I was so delighted,” Kingsley said. “Sean and I have championed each other over the years in a very delicate, intelligent and mature way and I am very happy for me, for me.”

John’s annual event serves as a fundraiser for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which over the last 17 years has raised more than $130 million toward fighting the disease.

Sunday’s party was expected to raise around $5 million, organisers said.
