Farmers call for revenge in Greater Noida

Greater Noida continues to simmer, a day after four farmers and a policeman were killed in an agitation by farmers. Heavy security has been deployed in the region after farmers decided to go ahead with their protests, saying ‘blood for blood’.
The Panchayat is expected to make a decision on the issue today (August 14). Farmers who were on protest for the past few days are demanding enhanced compensation for their land acquired in 2003 and 2005 by the Uttar Pradesh government on the lines of those acquired in 2008.
Heavy police depolyment has been enforced in the villages and at the office of Greater Noida Industrial development authority. Schools in Greater Noida have been ordered to shut as a precautionary measure.
Four persons, including a PAC man, were killed and 200 others injured in police firing and clashes after farmers agitating for adequate compensation for their acquired land in Greater Noida turned violent on Wednesday (August 13).
“Using restrain, police initially tried to pacify mob of villagers who had come in thousands to protest the land compensation issue. Police resorted to water guns, teargas shells, lathi charge. When still mob could not be controlled police had to fire. But there were reports that first farmers fired from the country made pistols at police team and then police retaliated,” IG (Police) Gian Singh said.
The three villagers killed were identified as Yogesh, Manoj and Rajinder and the PAC man as Sridhar.
