Veteran Indian fashion designer Ritu Kumar has been chosen for the prestigious “Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres” award by the the French government.
The award, Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters, has been bestowed on 64-year-old Kumar in recognition of her contribution to Indian fashion and the intensive work done by her in textile crafts especially in traditional techniques, the French Embassy said.
Kumar will be conferred the award by French Ambassador Jerome Bonnafont on behalf of the French Minister of Culture and Communication here on December 8.
Actor Shah Rukh Khan, Anjolie Ela Menon, Alka Pandhe, Merryl Streep and Daneille Steele are among the eminent personalities from the field of art and culture who have received this prestigious award in the past.
Kumar said the award is a recognition for not only her “personal journey” through the richness of Indian textile but is also the first of its kind given to the field of fashion in the Indian sub- continent.
“I am honoured and proud to receive this award not only on my behalf but on behalf of the estimated 16 million craftmen in India,” she said, adding France shares a unique synergy and understanding of India’s deep-rooted traditions and culture.
As the world moves into a mechanised mode, most of these crafts have been designated to studios. This tradition though is still alive in India, Kumar said.
