Govt not aware of number of street children

The government is not aware of the number of street children in the country as their numbers keep fluctuating, the Lok Sabha was told today (December 12).
For the welfare and rehabilitation of the street children, the Ministry is implementing a scheme namely “an integrated programme for street children,” Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Chowdhury said in a written reply.
She further said that under another scheme, a provision for setting up of transitional and open shelters has been made aiming to offer counselling, bridge education, vocational training in urban and semi-urban areas for such children.
“The scheme is awaiting competent approval,” the minister added.
