PML-N Chief Nawaz Sharif has today (March 12) alleged that the the government is plotting to assassinate him. The opposition party leader said that he had received information from his own sources that he faced a threat to his life from the Pakistani establishment.
This claim comes ahead of Sharif joining the long march which has already taken off in Karachi. Sharif is expected to join the march on the 16th of this month.
Sharif said “I have recently received certain information from credible sources about certain forces who are active against me. Threats to my life come from high-ranking government officials, certain topmost people in the government, my sources say.”
Sharif was speaking as the government arrested hundreds of political activists, lawyers and human rights campaigners before a planned mass opposition rally this week.
According to sources, Zardari’s spokesman, Farhatullah Babar dismissed Sharif’s allegations of a plot to kill him as “political mileage”. “This is outlandish,” said Babar. “The government is providing Sharif protection so that the militants don’t take advantage of the situation.”
