Hayden is unsure about his future, says Langer

Friday, December 19, 2008 at 3:12 am

Former Australia Test opener Justin Langer feels out-of-form Matthew Hayden was unsure about his future and speculation about his retirement will distract the left-hander and extend his bad patch further.

“My gut feeling is… maybe he’s not sure. There’s whispers about retirement,” Langer was quoted as saying in ‘Perthnow’. ”If he doesn’t know how long he’s going to go on for, that can become a distraction,” added Langer, who partnered Hayden in 75 Tests for Australia.

“If he doesn’t, it’s going to become a bit of a grey area and he’s going to keep going through what, by his standards, is a rough patch. ”Great players, if they are clear in their mind, then they always perform. As long as he knows what he is doing, the runs will follow,” he said.

Hayden had a bad run in the India-Australia four-Test series in India and daggers were out once he failed in the Test series against New Zealand.  And Hayden could manage only 12 in the first innings in the ongoing Test series against South Africa fuelling speculation that his time with the national team may be over.
