Indian Slumdog actor delighted with experience

After lights, camera, action, it is life as usual for Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, who played the youngest version of the main character’s brother in Slumdog Millionaire.

The story of Slumdog Millionaire is a rags-to-riches story about a boy from one of the city’s teeming slums competing on a TV game show. It has been nominated for best director, best adapted screenplay and best picture at the Oscar Academy Awards, and seven other odd categories.

Nine-year-old Ismail, who lives with his parents and siblings in a makeshift plastic tent in slum of Bandra suburb in India’s western Mumbai said he was delighted to be part of the film.

“I am very happy. We, five boys and five girls were called for an audition. We were given dialogues and we had to say it in front of camera, we did so and we were approved for the film,” Ismail said.

Ismail’s mother Shamim Begum said she is proud of her son and wants him to attain greater heights in life.

“All mothers want their children to do well in life. I want the same for my child,” she said.

‘Slumdog Millionaire’ has already won four honours at the Golden Globes this month and these include awards for the best drama apart from being nominated for 11 BAFTA awards.

The film’s famed music composer A.R. Rahman alone picked up three Oscar nominations.

Boyle, known for his unconventional story-telling in films  like ‘Trainspotting’, was accused of romanticising slums and peddling begging rackets, prostitution and crime as an index of Indian exotica.

Nonetheless, ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ has sparked a debate about whether such films reinforce the Western stereotypes about India, though Boyle said he was trying to capture Mumbai’s ‘lust for life’.
