Indo-French N-deal could be inked today

Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at 10:09 am

Tuesday (September 30), could mark a historic day for India as it signs the much-anticipated Indo-French nuclear agreement in the next 24 hours ending India’s decade old nuclear isolation.

The nuclear deal coming on the back of the Indo-US deal will be the first such pact to be initialled by any country with New Delhi, after it got a historic waiver at the NSG earlier this month. India and France had initialled the Framework Agreement for Civil Nuclear Cooperation in January, but had to wait pending a waiver from the 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group.

The Framework Agreement was inked during Sarkozy’s visit to India in January this year. Sources said that three French nuclear equipment suppliers Areva, Alstom and EDF are interested in exploring business opportunities in India.

On Monday, “Some good results will come,” said Manmohan Singh when asked whether India and France will sign the agreement on nuclear cooperation today in Paris, during the bilateral talks.

Echoing Singh’s positive remarks, the French President said “the matter will be discussed and decisions taken.”

“I don’t understand how we can say to our Indian friends, ‘Participate in the fight against global warming, but without civilian nuclear energy,’ which we know is the cleanest,” he said.

“Sometime ago, the NSG adjusted its guildelines in the matter of civil nuclear cooperation with India. We look forward to working with France and other countries in this area. We are having a summit today(with France), I hope some results will come out of this summit,” the Prime Minister said in a joint press interaction with Sarkozy.
