Inzamam backs Malik on captaincy

Thursday, January 1, 2009 at 5:01 am

With Pakistan not playing a single Test this year, captain Shoaib Malik hardly got a chance to prove his leadership skills and hence deserves to be retained for another season, feels former skipper Inzmam-ul Haq.

Malik’s tenure as captain ends today and the boards governing council is scheduled to meet in the second week of January to review his performance and decide if should be retained as captain. “I think Malik should be retained for another year so that his captaincy skills can be properly tested,” Inzamam said on Wednesday (Dec 31).

Malik had replaced Inzamam as captain after a disastrous World Cup campaign last year in which Pakistan were knocked out in the first round. The board preferred Malik over senior players like Mohammad Yousuf, Shoaib Akhtar and Shahid Afridi after Younis Khan refused the job.

“Pakistan has played no Tests in 2008 and I think the only way to really judge a player’s potential and his captaincy skills is to give him Test match exposure,” Inzamam said. “So I think it is too early to judge him as a captain. Pakistan has more cricket and will play more Tests in 2009 so he should be retained for another year,” he said.

Although Shoaib Akhtar has put his hand up for the job, Inzamam said Malik should be retained as Shoaib was yet to confirm his match fitness for even a regular place in the side. “Shoaib has to first make himself a permanent member of the team he has had lot of fitness and disciplinary issues in this year,” Inzamam pointed out.
