IPL to be held in South Africa?

Sunday, March 22, 2009 at 11:03 am

While BCCI officals are meeting to break the deadlock over the IPL, sources have told TIMES NOW that South Africa may become an alternative venue for the showpiece event.

Well if IPL zeros down on South Africa, then  It is believed that 12 venues in South Africa could be made available, with the northern part of the country preferred because of better weather conditions. According to various reports emerging out of South Africa, Wanderers, Centurion and Potchefstroom are likely venues for the mega event if South Africa takes over the tournament this year.

The reports also suggested that IPL chairman Modi and Cricket South Africa boss Gerald Majola have already had discussions about making a last-minute transfer of the tournament to that country. Senior officials from India and South Africa, however, have denied the possibility of reloacting the IPL’s second season to South Africa.

Cricket South Africa CEO Gerald Majola has denied any such move to shift the IPL to South Africa saying that there has been no official approach to Cricket South Africa, either by the BCCI or the IPL, and they don’t know where these rumours are emanating from.

If the tournament does move, it is expected to start around the third week of April, after the end of the South Africa-Australia one-day series.
