Israeli-Trained VCs Heading JK Varsities: Geelani

Sunday, June 8, 2008 at 8:06 am Under Kashmir News

Srinagar, May 30, KONS: The chairman of the breakaway faction of the Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, today said that “Israeli trained” vice-chancellors had been foisted on the four universities of the state to turn the institutions of higher learning into centers of waywardness, and threatened of a state-wide agitation if liquor outlets opened across Jammu and Kashmir were not closed by June 20. Addressing a public meeting after Friday prayers in Sarai Bala, Geelani said that vice and immorality were being systematically promoted in the state, and that popularizing liquor was a conspiracy to wean youth away from the movement and push them into the quagmire of error. “Liquor shops are being allowed to open everywhere, particularly in the vicinity of universities,” he said.Geelani gave the government an ultimatum to close all liquor shops in the state by June 20 or face a state-wide mass campaign. He warned that the government was engaged in a systematic programme to push the people of the state into the clutches of evil, and called for concerted and unified public efforts to counter it. “India cannot be stopped merely by remaining mute spectators. We will have to organize ourselves and rise with one voice against liquor, waywardness, immorality and other evil customs,” he said. “Even universities are not safe now. Students, too, are being targeted with vice, and the promotion of nudity in the name of various programmes is a part of the same design,” he said. ?The vice-chancellors of the state’s four major universities like the Kashmir University, Jammu University and the Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University have been specially trained in Israel to alter and subvert the thinking of the students,” he said. Citing an example, he said that a programme held in the Kashmir University recently was open proof that the educational institution was being turned into a theatre. Geelani said that the state was under army rule, and everything was being done at the say-so of the governor. He said that the duration of the Amarnath yatra was extended to two months on the diktat of the governor, though the former chief minister had opposed the move, no heed was paid to him.”All authority is vested with the governor and the army. The governor is a particular kind of Hindu who wants to promote Shaivism instead of the message of Hazrat Mir Syed Ali Hamadani,” he said.Severely criticizing giving land on lease, Geelani said that during his membership of the assembly he had warned Sheikh Abdullah about the plan’s disastrous impact on the people of the state. “But Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah had been bought by India, and he was implementing the Indian agenda,” he said. “We will not allow the promotion of liquor, vice and immorality in the state at any cost. Therefore the government should immediately refrain from such moves,” he said. Referring to the reports of families of servicemen being settled in the state, Geelani said that the move was aimed at changing the demographic character of the state, and would be stiffly opposed.
