Jaya Prada, Raj Babbar on poll mode

Friday, February 27, 2009 at 2:02 am

Film star-turned politicians Jaya Prada and Raj Babbar may be vying for tickets from different parties, but they have one thing in common — a dream to return to the 15th Lok Sabha. While Jaya Prada is hoping to get Samajwadi Party nomination from Rampur in Uttar Pradesh again, Babbar is eying the Fatehpur Sikri seat in the state on a Congress ticket to return to the 15th Lok Sabha.

Babbar was elected on a SP ticket to the Lok Sabha from neighbouring Agra, which has now become a reserved constituency after the delimitation exercise. Posing for the shutterbugs together outside Parliament on the last day of the session, they said like-minded parties should come together. “I am too small too comment on the seat-sharing talks between the SP and the Congress,” Jaya Prada told reporters expressing hope that things should go well.

She further said, “I want to continue the work which I have been doing for the last five years for the people of Rampur.” Babbar echoed similar sentiments. “I hope to come back to the Lok Sabha again,” he said, reflecting on the work he did as an MP for the last five years. On seat sharing merely said, “If two like-minded parties come together, it is good”.

Asked whether she will get party nomination from Rampur as senior SP leader Azam Khan too has expressed his desire to contest the seat, Jaya Prada said, “I have travelled from Andhra Pradesh to Uttar Pradesh for politics…Azam Khan ji took me to Rampur to contest the last elections. If he contests, I am ready to leave the seat”.

She, however, added that Azam Khan has now said he does not want to contest from this seat. “I will fight the Rampur seat, if he doesn’t.” On a query about film-stars not performing well as politicians in and outside Parliament, Babbar said, “Those who have performed will be seen here (Parliament), those who haven’t, would not be around.”
