Sunday, August 17, 2008 at 2:08 am

Jenitha Anto is a chess champ and has won many a laurels for the country but now she finds herself in a difficult spot. She has been invited to participate at the world chess Olympiad at Germany but has no funds. Her medals stand testimony to the success she has tasted at many a tournament, the glory that she has brought to this nation, today Jenitha wants to take another step forward to add one more feather to her cap by going to play at the World Chess Olympiad in Germany where she has been invited…Jenitha faces the biggest obstacle – the lack of funds.

For 20 year old Jenitha Anto the World Chess Olympiad is becoming a distant dream with each passing day. Despite an invitation to play in Germany, lack of funds could mean that Jenitha will not be able to live her dream. Reflecting his daughters dream, Kanickai Riudayaraj said, “For the world handicapped team in the Chess Olympiad, it’s the first time that Jenitha Anto from India is participating. Participation itself is a big chance. We wanted to defeat some International Masters and Grand Masters in the competition.”

For Jenitha, the invitation to play at a world stage was a chance to prove to the world that with chess she could fight back a crippling attack of polio that left her strapped to a wheel chair very early in life. But with the state and National Chess Associations refusing to bear the costs, Jenitha has little options before her. In a plea to help her live her dream she said, “I am going to Germany with the help of my father but I want the government to help me.”

This gritty girl is not ready to give up the fight and with each passing day she now lives with the optimism that her dream to play in the World Chess Olympiad will come true. However, this is not going to deter the chess champ, who has even secured a second place at the 8th world individual chess championship held at Poland last year, from distancing herself from her passion.
