Karat sets G8 deadline for pullout

Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at 5:07 am

CPI(M) Party General Secretary Prakash Karat the sets G8 deadline for pullout. Karat has quoted, “Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said, he will go for G8 meet only if the deal makes it to IAEA. Now that he has decided to go gives a clear indication that he has made up his mind. This is a very serious move. On July 4 (2008), we will take a final decision.”

CPI(M) today (July 1, 2008) said, the Left parties will decide on their future course of strategy in their July 4 (2008) meeting on the Indo-US nuclear deal. Prakash Karat cited this to the reporters, when he was asked what the Left parties planned to do, against the backdrop of reports that SP was moving close to Congress and may support the Indo-US nuclear deal.

Karat stated, it was unfortunate that the government has not not kept its word given in the November 16 (2007) meeting of the UPA-Left committee, that it would operationalise the deal taking into  account the concerns of the committee.

In a veiled attack on Sonia Gandhi, Karat said the Congress leadership “as a whole”, was responsible for the present impasse. Asked if his party was ready for elections, Karat mentioned, “Let the people decide whether the nation needs the nuclear deal.”

TDP today (July 1) declared, the UNPA was united on its stand of opposing the Indo-US nuclear deal and dismissed reports that SP would support Congress on the issue. TDP leader Yerran Naidu, who met CPI(M) leader Prakash Karat, said SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav had never said that he was supporting the Congress or the nuclear deal.

Naidu also added, “The Third Front, whose leaders are meeting on Thursday (July 3) to decide on their stand on the deal, ‘as a whole stands by its decision taken in Parliament’ of opposing it. The meeting on July 3, would also discuss issues like price rise.”
