At least 50 people were injured in clashes between the supporters of Kazi Faruk, sacked chairman of Proshika, one of the country’s largest NGOs and his opponents near its headquarters at Mirpur yesterday. At least 25 of the seriously injured persons were taken to different hospitals and clinics for treatment
Eye witnesses said the clashes occurred when Kazi Faruk and his son Rubayet Ahmed along with their 300 supporters came to the Proshikha headquarters in a procession and tried to enter the office in a bid to occupy the headquarters and take control of the NGO.
The men of Kazi Faruk tried to break the main gate of the NGO building with hammers. But they failed to do it in the face of strong opposition from their rivals who retaliated by throwing brickbats.
The supporters of Kazi faruk made several attempts to storm into the Proshika headquarters, but their bids were thwarted every time by their opponents from inside the Proshika building and its rooftop.
Several bouts of clashes between 9-30: am 3:pm left at least 50 people injured on both sides.
Four of the injured were identified as Saidul Haque, Abdus Sattar, Salauddin and Ahad. Kazi Faruk himself collapsed around 1:30 pm due to scorching heat and he was immediately taken to National Heart Foundation Hospital in the city.
Faruk, who also faces money-laundering charges, told newsmen yesterday that he is still the chairman of Proshika.
“I came to office but was not allowed to enter, he noted.
Proshika’s board of governors replaced Kazi Faruk as chairman in May this year in the face of employees’ agitation against him for alleged corruption and nepotism. Faruk was replaced by advocate Abdul wadud.
Faruk avoided the query when he was asked about his intrusion into the building. A petition challenging his removal and formation of a new board is yet to be resolved in court, he said.
Upon a revision petition filed by Faruk against the lower court order, a High Court bench on July 2 issued a rule upon the governing body of Proshika to explain within 10 days why an injunction should not be imposed on its decision removing Faruk, from the office of its chairman.
Chowdhury Monzurul Kabir, deputy police commissioner of the Mirpur zone, said the clash was “an organisational matter of Proshika”.
“We are not concerned about which group is right and which is wrong. We have nothing to do with their internal affairs. We will do whatever is required to maintain law and order,” he added.
