Just moments later, longtime rival Mao Asada of Japan wore a stoic look, wondering if she had done enough to hold on to a silver medal.

By then the Olympic title belonged to South Korea’s most famous celebrity, the one they call “The Queen.” Kim, 19, all but knew it as soon as she ended her flawless program to a George Gershwin concerto. The audience at Pacific Coliseum joined her in the celebration, even though three skaters had yet to perform.

For the first time in her illustrious career, she shed tears.

“I can’t believe this is not a dream anymore,” Kim said later.

In what had been billed as a showdown between the world’s most-gifted skaters, Kim handed her competitors an old-fashioned butt -kicking, scoring a world-record total of 228.56 points. Asada made mistakes in her dark program skated to “Bells of Moscow” by Rachmaninov.

“To complete both triple-axels well at the Olympics was one good thing about my performance,” Asada said. “But I am not happy with the rest of my performance. I do feel regretful.”

Those difficult triple axels proved enough to hold off everyone’s emotional favorite, Joannie Rochette, for the silver medal by almost three points. Rochette skated only four days after her mother Therese died of a heart attack in Vancouver.
