Kolkata’s five-day weekend
Thursday, January 22, 2009 at 9:01 am
Kolkata can lie back and stretch. Starting today (January 22), Kolkata is literally shutting down for five days.
A left wing party, the Students Unity Council of India (SUCI) has given a call for a bandh today–demanding among things, a cut in fuel prices, reduction of electricity tariffs and cheaper bus fares.
Moreover, the West Bengal government employees, too, are going on strike today, which also marks the begining of a long weekend for Kolkata.
Today, is more or less an off day because of the SUCI strike. Similarly, tomorrow is an official government holiday due to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s birthday. Further, Saturday and Sunday are mandatory government holidays, while Monday is Republic Day. This makes for five holidays in a row–giving Kolkatans plenty of time to relax.
