Lalu exits ‘no smoking zone’

Thursday, July 31, 2008 at 5:07 am

It looks like the stage is being set for a fresh clash of political will between two high profile ministers of the Manmohan Singh’s cabinet. Union Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad endorsed the sale of tobacco products around the land he sought from farmers of the area for setting up an industrial unit. He claimed that the progress that the area was likely to see would boost sales of everything including bidis and cigarettes.

A very optimistic Lalu Prasad said, ”Apart from the employment that people will get, those who sell milk, curd, butter, meat, rice, dal, vegetables, books, copies, ‘bidis’, cigarettes and bananas; all of it will find a market”

Lalu Prasad’s comments are unlikely to go down well with the health Ministry headed by Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss who has been a vociferous advocate of stricter tobacco laws and for a ban on sale of tobacco products.
