‘Lanka should suspend military moves’

Friday, February 13, 2009 at 4:02 am

Expressing concern over the humanitarian situation in Sri Lanka, President Prathiba Patil stated on Thursday (February 12), the military should suspend its operations and LTTE lay  down arms, with both the forces returning to the negotiating table.

“We are concerned at the plight of civilians, internally displaced in Sri Lanka on account of escalation of the military conflict,” Patil said in her address to the joint sitting of Parliament.

Patil also mentioned, India continues to support a negotiated political settlement in Sri Lanka within the framework of an undivided Sri Lanka acceptable to all the communities, including the Tamil community.

“I would appeal to the Government of Sri Lanka and to the LTTE to return to the negotiating table,” cited Patil.

As the President averred, “This can be achieved if simultaneously, the Government of Sri Lanka suspends its military operations and the LTTE declares its willingness to lay down arms, and to begin talks with the government.”

India has been urging Sri Lanka to ensure the safety and security of civilians during its offensive against the LTTE.
