SRINAGAR: In occupied Kashmir, life was paralysed Friday in the district of Islamabad, following a general strike, called by veteran Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani in protest against the illegal occupation of lakhs of kanals of land by Indian troops.
Indian police personnel subjected protestors to brute force in Islamabad town who retaliated with stone pelting amidst anti-India slogans. Earlier, a public meeting was addressed by Hurriyet leaders at Cheeni Chowk. People took out a big pro-liberation procession in Hajan area of Sonawari.
All Parties Hurriyet Conference leader, Nayeem Ahmed Khan, addressing a gathering at Rangrate in Srinagar, said that India had forcibly occupied Jammu and Kashmir and the people were struggling to secure their inalienable right to self-determination.
Speaking at a seminar in Srinagar, Kashmiri human rights activists, Pervez Imroz and Zahir-ud-Din said that India had institutionalised torture in the occupied territory to use it as a weapon of war to suppress general masses.
They demanded repeal of draconian laws like Public Safety Act, empowering authorities to detain people for years in false cases. Torture victims, Muhammad Ahsan Untoo, Rafi Punjabi and others narrated their ordeal at the seminar.
Seven people were injured when a grenade exploded in Sopore town in the afternoon, today. Another blast at Chanderkote in Ramban resulted in the injuries to nine persons.
