Increasingly incenced with the growing menace of monkeys at the Lucknow railway station, officials have hired a man whose job is to dress up like a monkey and scare the real monkeys away!
Dressed as a monkey, Acchan Miyan alias Gudde, has been working overtime to scare away monkeys from the Charbag railway station of Lucknow.
Gudde’s job is to roam the station dressed as a monkey scaring the other simians away. He is infact paid a regular salary by the railways. The move is paying rich dividends as monkeys now are now staying away from attacking unsuspecting rail commuters.
Poverty made forty-two year old Acchan consider this unusual profession. The railways administration in Lucknow in India’s northern Uttar Pradesh employ Acchan to scare away monkeys who have been a menace to the passengers.
“There were many monkeys here. But all of them have run away. I can’t see even a single monkey here. There were thousands of monkeys here. People warned me that I will be eaten by the animals. But I sacred them all the way. If I stay here for one week at the station I will scare away all the monkeys.,” boasts Acchan.
Formerly, Acchan only used to entertain people by his antics but now he is doing a public service as well. He earns anything between 300-400 rupees (3-4 GBP) per day. Passengers are optimistic that monkeyman’s stay at the railway station for sometime more would drive away the remaining monkeys.
“There used to be many monkeys here, who would cause all kinds of mischief. At times they would tear seat covers of trains and on others they would snatch away bananas from passengers. Poor passengers will certainly be protected from monkey menace by Acchans’s act,” Santosh Kumar, a passenger said.
A Muslim by religion, Acchan has even started worshipping Indian mythical monkey god Hanuman. He has no reservations in offering prayers to a Hindu deity. The monkeyman admits that he is doing the act simply for a living.
