Maj Unnikrishnan’s colleagues recall his qualities

Colleagues in the Bihar Regiment of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan who became a martyr during last month’s terror attacks in Mumbai think of him as a man who always took the initiative and depicted a never-say-die attitude in all the work that he did.

During exclusive conversations with PTI, the colleagues recalled various qualities that Sandeep displayed during operations in places ranging from riot-hit Godhara to Jammu and Kashmir.

Major Ravi Kumar who was subaltern for Sandeep said that he was commissioned in the army during Operation Vijay on July 12, 1999 and added that he showed grit and determination at the forward posts in the face of heavy artilery firing and small arms fire by Pakistan troops.

Major Kumar said that on the evening of December 31, 1999, Major Sandeep led a team of six soldiers and managed to establish a post 200 metres from the enemy and under direct enemy observation and fire.

Mithilesh Kumar, a soldier who worked under Major Sandeep recalled an incident at the firing range where the lunch that had come was insufficient.

Mithilesh said that when Sandeep realised this, without blinking an eyelid, he took all the men to a nearby restaurant and footed their lunch bill.

Captain Ashutosh Singh who is now adjutant describedSandeep as a sincere, hard-working, spirited and very forthright personality.

Singh said that the martyred major was a thorough professional and a hard task master who had the ability to inspire by his convictions.
