Malegaon blast accused and mastermind Lieutenant Colonel Srikant Purohit was on Tuesday (November 18) remanded to judicial custody till November 29. Pune Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) sought his custody in another case, which was also granted by the court.
Arrested Army Lt Col Purohit was on Tuesday taken into custody by the Pune ATS in a case of submitting fake documents and cheating. He was taken after his police custody in connection with the Malegaon blast case ended today.
Purohit, arrested earlier this month, was produced before a Nashik court where the Mumbai ATS sought his judicial custody, which was granted till November 29. However, the Pune ATS moved an application seeking the army official’s custody in another case registered with them.
Pune ATS officials informed the court that a case under sections 465 (punishment for forgery), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document), 474 (having possession of documents described in section 467) and 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) had been filed against Purohit.
They also submitted an order from a Pune court regarding his arrest. The custody of another Malegaon blasts case accused, Sameer Kulkarni, an Abhinav Bharat functionary, who is currently in judicial custody till November 29, was also transferred to the Khadki police station in Pune, special counsel for ATS Ajay Misar said.
Kulkarni’s custody has been transferred to the Pune police in connection with a case lodged against him in 2007 for assaulting a Christian religious leader. Purohit and Kulkarni are likely to be produced in a Pune court tomorrow, Misar said.
The narco-analysis test conducted on Purohit has revealed the shocking information that during his tenure in the Military Intelligence wing of the Army, he had utilised all information he received to plan the Malegaon blast. Purohit also confessed that he conducted Malegaon blast to avenge the attacks of Simi.
During the narco-analysis conducted in Bangalore, Purohit revealed that he had gathered information about a local group in Malegaon which specialised in assembling bombs. This group also assisted terror outfit Simi in their attacks. Purohit also confessed that he had convinced the bomb-making group to assist him in the attacks which he planned along with Sadhvi Pragya and her mentor Mahant Amritanand alias Dayanand Pandey.
When asked as to why he placed the bombs in motorcycles, Purohit said he wanted to avenge Simi’s attacks and use similar tactics so as to mislead the police. Purohit said, “While serving as an officer in the Military Intelligence, I was assigned the job of collecting information on terror outfits in the Maharashtra region. I zeroed in on a group in Malegaon, which had helped Simi.”
Purohit further said, “I got in touch with this group and convinced them to assemble bombs for our outfit. I even resorted to threatening this group to do this work. We had planned on carrying out a terror strike at Malegaon this year and the planning was undertaken by Thakur and her mentor Pandey along with me.”
Purohit also said, “The bombs that were finally assembled were very similar to the ones used during the Malegaon blasts of 2006. We also decided to use the same modus operandi by planting the bombs on motorcycles. We wanted to avenge the attacks by Simi and secondly we thought by using similar tactics, we could mislead the police.”
