Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday (October 24) met his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani in Beijing to review progress in bilateral ties, the second meeting between the two leaders within three months.
Singh, who arrived on Thursday (October 23) after a three-day visit to Japan, met the Pakistan Prime Minister on the sidelines of the ASEM summit in the Chinese capital. Their meeting comes a month after Singh met Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari in New York on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly.
During their talks, Singh and Zardari had vowed to take terrorism head-on. Singh had earlier met Gilani during the SAARC summit in Colombo in August. Ahead of the Singh-Gilani meeting, Pakistan’s official APP news agency reported that “this will be an important informal interaction between the two South Asian leaders to discuss matters of bilateral interest against the background of on-going Composite Dialogue between the two countries.”
It quoted a senior Pakistani official as saying that Gilani and Singh would avail themselves of the opportunity, while attending the ASEM summit, to have a brief review of the progress being made to promote understanding and cooperation for resolving bilateral issues, including the Kashmir problem.
