A Marathi film on capital punishment produced by two Goan women has been selected for an American film festival scheduled to be held in San Fransisco next month. ‘Mare Paryant Fashi’, a Marathi fiction flick, produced by the Goan duo — Dr Pramod Salgaoncar and Jyoti Cuncolienkar has been selected for the Golden Gate Fiction and documentary Festival to be held at California, USA.
“We were pleasantly surprised to receive an email informing us about the selection,” Dr Salgaoncar, who is also a Chairman of Goa Women’s commission, said. “The jury will display the films for evaluation, in the approved digital format. There will be no public screenings, the results will be announced by Internet and distributed by international press media,” the email written by organisers to the filmmakers reads.
The fiction based on the capital punishment was rejected in the Indian panorama section of International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2008 slated in November-December in Goa. “We were optimistic that our film will make it up in the Indian Panorama. But we were at fault, we did not sent the prints with sub titles for selection. The jury outrightly rejected the film ,” Cuncolienkar, who is a co-producer and writer of the film, said.
However, continuing their attempts to get their film noticed in the film festivals, they applied for Golden Gate Fiction and Documentary Festival. And this time, they managed to break through. The film which is shot in Goa and Mumbai has veterans actors like Kishor Kadam, Varsha Usgaonkar, Prabhakar Panshikar and Ashok Samarth.
“The film is extensively shot at Aguada jail in Goa. It speaks about the last few moments of the person who is likely to be hanged till death,” Cuncolienkar said. The filmmakers feel that although they missed Indian Panorama, the organisers will allow them to premier the film during IFFI 2008.
“We have asked the IFFI organisers to let us premier the film during the festival. We are awaiting for their response,” she said.
