As the 12-hour strike by Airports Authority of India (AAI) employees continues, Civil Aviation ministry today (August 20) said the protest has not affected airport operations in most cities across the country, except Kolkata.
“The strike has not much affected airport services in most cities, except in Kolkata, as per information we have in the ministry,” Chawla said today on the sidelines of an event on helicopter emergency medical evacuation services.
Reacting to queries from reporters, Chawla said the AAI employees were on strike over various issues under the aegis of their trade union. Delhi and Mumbai airport employees have an agreement signed through the ministry with private airport developers, under which eight per cent of the AAI employees could opt to join the new companies, Chawla said.
“The employees are yet to take a decision, which will be purely theirs. The rest of the employees, who decide to remain with AAI, will be utilised in the work that are the responsibility of the AAI,” he said.
The Ministry, Chawla said, held regular discussions with the employees’ unions to thrash out issues concerning them for which a mechanism already existed in which representatives from the ministry, employees unions and other stakeholders were members.
